A mobile phone with roaming feature can connect to another network when its service provider is not available in the area where the phone operates. Mobile phone network roaming also enhances the usability and fulfils the purpose of a cell phone.
The British Infrastructure Group laments the fact that foreigners in the UK are getting better coverage service because they can switch to any service provider at any time. Around 17 million mobile users experience poor reception in their homes and more than 500 areas in the UK are without signal.
This is the reason why MP's are insisting that mobile phone network roaming should be permitted to roam or use an alternate network when the current service has no signal or none at all. Phone companies are saying they are doing their best to improve network coverage.
A solid group of around 90 MPs is calling for enabling a law that will allow domestic roaming and make it convenient for customers to switch to alternate networks. They also called for the identification of networks with the worst coverage performance.
After the government went for the 2014 investment offer of £5 billion from network operators, there was no improvement in the network coverage situation. It is expected that the target of 90 percent network coverage by last quarter of 2017 cannot be achieved.
According to Group Chairman Grant Shapps the situation is unacceptable when Britain is stuck with a single network with poor mobile provider service while visiting foreigners have much better coverage service from alternative providers.
MP Shapps was forced to use a foreign SIM card at the height of the election campaign so he could remain in contact with others in areas where the reception was poor.
In many areas, people rely on landlines because there are no mobile provider connections in the places where they stay. They miss business opportunities and they are unable to connect with their loved ones in cases of emergencies.
Obviously, the MP's seem to have a reason to demand change.
