Starbucks WiFi: AT&T Out, Google In; How Much Better Will It Be? [VIDEO & REPORT]

Google replaces AT&T as Starbucks' WiFi provider, promising faster connection to over 7,000 branches in the U.S.

The $243.05-billion industry partners with the $1.6-billion coffee enterprise in setting up a WiFi speed 10 times faster than its previous provider. The deal was announced by Google Access' Kevin Lo yesterday.

"Coffee shop and Internet -it's a pairing that many of us have come to rely on" shares Lo, in a report by EWeek . "WiFi access makes work time, downtime, travel time and lots of in-between times more enjoyable and productive. That's why we're teaming up with Starbucks to bring faster, free WiFi connections to all 7,000 company-operated Starbucks stores in the United States over the next 18 months."

In a report by CNET , Starbucks' chief digital officer Adam Brotman notes, "We do hope this is one step amongst many that we can continue to build upon what's already a great partnership with Google."

The shift was made in light of the increased dependence on fast and free WiFi in the world's most famous coffee shop, whether it's for streaming or downloading. "Our goal is to continue to provide our customers with the best in-store experience possible, and we are excited to offer these kinds of unparalleled experiences at a broad scale.", shares Brotman. As for AT&T, the company's spokesman Mark Siegel tells they will continue to provide Starbucks "a variety of services".

Apart from improving its WiFi, Google also seeks to develop the Starbucks Digital Network- where users are directed to the WiFi access page. No further details were disclosed about the matter, including how much this financial venture cost either of the parties.

Lo states that it will start rolling out updates over the course of the next 18 months.
