Ella Macpherson's wedding was this weekend, but this fairy tale ending was cut short by a series of pictures on Twitter. The old advertisements for Elle Macpherson Intimates has resurfaced on the popular social media network.
The 2004 advertisement was called "Blue Shoes." In the ad, one can see a woman lying face first on the ground. She seems very weak as if she's crying after something bad has happened. The woman is wearing nothing but a lingerie and blue shoes (Hence, the title of the ad "Blue Shoes"). Her face was also hidden meaning she was ashamed of something.
"This woman looks fragile frightened & defenseless," tweeted Aussie bra entrepreneur Renee Mayne.
In addition to that, she tweeted "WTF was Elle MacPherson Intimates thinking when they released this image It goes against EVERYTHING lingerie is about."
Even if the ad is already almost a decade old, Twitterverse was not pleased with the circulation of the photograph, with Twitter users tweeting that the ad is totally troubling and almost looks "rapey." Indeed, it seems that it is an ad for rape rather than a lingerie.
As luck would have it, another Elle Macpherson Intimates poster also caused quite a scandal. The ad depicted a woman who looks like she was pleasing herself. Many fans expressed their outrage with this photo. It was then banned by the Advertising Standards Authority even if Vogue magazine tried to defend the photo saying it was "beautiful with no disturbing undertones."
"Blue Shoes" is not in circulation meaning the photo was not banned. As we can see, many people are still concerned with how big and famous companies try to attract the attention of the consumers. It seems that most consumers still want advertisements that show morality and reflect the values of the society.
