After years of absence from the entertainment industry, the Oscar Award winning director Warren Beatty (Reds, 1982) is back in the limelight as he directs, co-produces, and co-stars with Lily Collins, Alden Ehrenreich, Annette Bening, and Matthew Broderick in the upcoming romantic comedy-drama film: "Rules Don't Apply." The film also features an impressive supporting cast including Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Oliver Platt, Steve Coogan, Ed Harris, Haley Bennett, Candice Bergen, Dabney Coleman, Taissa Farmiga, and Megan Hilty.
Beatty plays the part of eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. According to Beatty, the "Rules Don't Apply" is not a biopic about Hughes. Rather, the film revolves around the unusual love story between devout Baptist Marla Mabrey and devout Methodist Frank Forbes set in 1958. In an interview with PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly, Beatty said, "This is a story about a young man and a young woman who come to Hollywood, both of whom are affected by American Protestant, American Puritan morality on the brink of the sexual revolution and the rise of feminism that was to take place in the early '60s."
Set in 1958 Hollywood, beauty-queen, aspiring acress and songwriter Marla Mabrey (Collins) from Virginia, arrives in Los Angeles under contract to infamous Howars Hughes (Beatty). She meets Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), a young ambitious businessman, who also happens to be her driver. Forbes, engaged to be married to his 7th grade sweetheart, is also under contract with Hughes. Mabrey and Forbes develops an instant attraction which puts their religious convictions to the limit, with Mabrey being a devout Baptist, and Forbes, a devout Methodist. Also, under Hughes, any relationship with a contract actress is forbidden. The interaction between Mabrey and Forbes will take them to unforseen scenarios which will change their core values and their lives.
