Yemeni security officials have announced that the planned alleged terrorist attack was foiled a few days before Ramadan ended. Security groups purported than there were exhaustive plans laid out by Al-Qaeda operatives to target major oil depots and pipelines in the country.
The threat forced establishments and different government embassies to close operations due to bombing and killing incidents since Tuesday. Investigators have intercepted information that the Al-Qaeda plan involved their own people wearing Yemeni security uniforms to seize gas export facilities. Speculators say that the incident may be related to United States diplomatic missions in the region to withdraw US military troops out of the country.
On Wednesday, at least six people were killed during a US drone strike in Southern Yemen. Similar incident also occurred when at least six missiles were fired in the provincial capital of Ataq. A witness told an Al Jazeera editor that possibly one member of the Al-Qaeda group was killed during those drone strikes, thus, provoking the rebels to ensue further bombings.
Since July 28, at least 20 people were killed by US drone missions involving some members of another armed group named Ansar al-Sharia that is said to be an affiliate of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
US Intelligence came across with tactical information on bombing plans that prompted all government agencies including those of United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy and Netherlands to suspend their operations following the threats.
Tightened security alert is still reinforced in the whole region of Yemen especially on its city capital with jet fighters patrolling in the air. Though security troops are positive to have interrupted a possible widespread terrorist attack on Yemen soil and its international gas export industry, the government is still digging to unearth intercepted intelligence on future plots by suspected Al-Qaeda members.
