"Highschool of The Dead" Season 1 aired back in 2010 and it definitely earned a massive fan base. The zombie apocalypse anime series has fans craving for a second season. MadHouse Studios has yet to cancel or renew the anime series.
With that being said, there is still a chance that "Highschool of The Dead" will still get a second season and some reports say it is likely to air in 2017. If we look back at the final episode of HOTD Season 1, it implies that there will be a continuation. Episode 13 "Wandering Dead" ended with a note saying "The battle is not over yet."
Even with the massive fan base and the high demand for a second season, the producers have a reason to delay its production. According to Yibada, the main reason that the hit zombie anime series has yet to air a second season is tied to the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
In addition, the Japanese authorities are a superstitious bunch and decided to stray away from any story line related to an apocalypse. Hence the "Highschool of The Dead" Season 2 was delayed.
Another reason for the delay is the show's feedback. It is a given that HOTD had great feedback in some western countries. Some western companies even took the license of the anime series in order for it to air there.
To name a few, Sentai Filmworks, Anime Network VOD and Microsoft's Zune Marketplace. While for Australia and New Zealand, the series was taken in by Madman Entertainment. The said company is also interested in purchasing the rights for the show's second season. According to FabNewz It is evident that "Highschool of The Dead" faired well in western countries, however, the same cannot be said for its home country, Japan.
Japan, along with other eastern countries find that "Highschool of The Dead" features content that is way too explicit. All these reasons caused the delay of a much-awaited second season of "Highschool of The Dead."
The series could be back by 2017, along with other popular titles like Tokyo Ghoul. In a recent report in Jobs & Hire, it was mentioned that MadHouse will be taking over the said series. With HOTD and Tokyo Ghoul under the same studio, fans are hopeful both will be released by 2017.
