When "Divergent" star Shailene Woodley joined protesters against the Dakota Access pipeline project, she did not expect to be arrested and confronted with criminal charges. Her trial was postponed from January 25 to February 22, 2016 due to conflicting lawyers' schedule.
At the time she was arrested the actress welcomed the scene hoping that media will spread the news like wildfire and entice more protesters to join their cause. After her arrest, she now is in a precarious position to get jailed for a month and be fined for $1,500.
Her only complaint was why she was singled out as the one to be arrested when there were many other protesters with her during the rally. According to Daily Bruin, perhaps, it was because arresting one with her celebrity status will warn other protesters to back down from their activities.
Her joining the protests has surely helped in the delaying of the pipeline construction and made the issue a nationwide concern. Many people are surely interested on what a pretty star like Shailene Woodley is protesting against.
The incidence has also brought more attention to the legal battle between the Dakota Access Pipeline project and an American Indian community. The Standing Rock Sioux who is claiming that the project will contaminate their source of water, Movienewsguide reported. The protests against the $3.8 billion pipeline project have also been attracting interested parties to view the protester's quest in the web.
Actually, Shailene Woodley is not alone in her fate since 470 other protesters have also been arrested since the rallies began. The Dakota Access pipeline project, which was supposed to be completed on November, 2016 has been delayed because of the protests
How to balance her movie career and the activities she supports seems to be Woodley's concern in the coming months. She is slated to appear with Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in a TV series with HBO entitled Big Little Lies. She hopes to endear herself to her fans for her cause-oriented activities.
