222 Golden Retrievers gathered in Scotland's Guisachan House, Tuesday (August 13) to commemorate the breed's birth place.
The event, which is called the Guisachan Gathering, had these 222 Golden Retrievers busy all day, with fun activities like practiced dog shows, parades, tug-of-wars and of course, a whole lot fetch! The festival was enough to make even the 101 Dalmatians jealous and their pet owners proud to be owning such well-mannered and lovable dogs.
Jim Richardson, a committee member and organizer of the festival shares, 'The last three months of planning were a bit manic, but it was all worthwhile. I had a PA system and I was shouting at the owners "Get out! Get out of the photo!" When asked how owners can possible distinguish their own dog out of the 222 Golden Retrievers, he tells, 'Of course, everybody knows their own dog, and your eyes are glued to it the whole time' The event drew in owners and dog enthusiasts from around the world, even coming as far as Hawaii.
Hosted by the Golden Retriever Club of Scotland, the 222 dogs all celebrated in the house of Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, known as Lord Tweedmouth in the 19th century and was also regarded as the first ever breeder of the Golden Retriever. First born in 1868, the breed came from a yellow wavy-coated retriever and a tweed water-spaniel, which is now listed as extinct. The Americans recognized the breed 64 years later.
The Guisachan Gathering was first held in 2006, attracting over 188 dogs, which at the time was the largest group of the breed together in one place. Now, it seems like their numbers are just growing and more of the breed and pet lovers are coming to see the annual festival.
The Golden Retriever is one, if not the most loved breed out of all dogs. Andrew Garfield and Oprah are only two of its notable fans.
