Sandra Oh told Hollywood Reporter that she is ready to let Dr. Cristina Yang, the character she plays in the series, go. One of the original cast members of the award-winning show which also became the breakout show for actress Katherine Heigl, Oh starred in the show for eight years.
The Canadian actress who won a Golden Globe for her role in the series told the media, "Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go."
The actress, 42, will leave the show in its 10 season. She added to her statement, "It's such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well.
"Cristina wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go. We have to start the process, story-wise, for the Grey's writers to think of why she's going to go."
It was an emotional decision for Oh to let go of her Grey's character. The actress, apart from her Golden Globe, also received Emmy nominations for best supporting actress for her portrayal of the ambitious Dr. Yang.
Shonda Rhimes, creator of Grey's Anatomy thanked Oh for her "collaboration on a character we both love so deeply". "One of the best days of my life as a writer happened the day Sandra Oh walked in my door to audition and forever changed the course of Grey's Anatomy with her brilliant, nuanced portrayal of Cristina Yang," Rhimes told reporters.
She added, "This year is going to be bittersweet for us - we're both going to savour every moment of Cristina Yang, and then we're going to give her the exit she deserves. And when Sandra walks out of my door, Grey's Anatomy will once again be forever changed."
According to ABC, they are intent on keeping the show on air for years to come.
