222 Golden Retrievers gathered in the place where they were first bred -breaking their record from the past years. The furry companions came from all around the globe descending upon last month's Guisacahan Gathering -the gathering that now made 101 Dalmatians hide in shame.
The yearly Golden Retriever festival celebrates the breed's existence in their historic birthplace.
The event brought great joy to the owners of the dogs and to hundreds of other attendees. A number of these attendees are veterans and those who suffer from PTSD or posttraumatic stress who have found relief from the unconditional love given by golden retrievers.
The festival is now on its third year but a looser form of the festivities started in 2006 when a group of Golden Retriever lovers decided to celebrate the person who first bred these dogs -Lord Tweedmouth.
Bred as gundogs, Golden Retrievers were made for retrieving waterfowl. However, because of their intelligence, they are able to fill different roles with ease. This includes being guide dogs for the blind and detection dogs for drug searches. They are even trained for search and rescue teams.
Golden Retrievers are very friendly and have a gentle temperament as compared to other breeds. While they are quite playful, Golden Retrievers can be easily trained.
Bred by Lord Tweedmouth in the 19th century at Guisachan -the baron's highland estate, the breed's lineage was disputed but in the year 1952, questions were laid to rest. The breed was bred from the Newfoundland, the Irish setter and the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. The baron later perfected the breed with cobblers pup.
Today, there are many households that own Golden Retrievers -the breed being one of the most popular dog breeds around the globe. There are three different types of Golden Retrievers -the American, the Canadian, and the British.
