President-elect Donald Trump and Congress are now making plans to erode job protections and grind down benefits that federal workers have been receiving for a long time. As one of his promises to the voters, Trump plans to fight fraud and abuse starting by Firing unproductive government workers.
According to Postal Times, Donald Trump's intention to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations and replace it with fair bilateral trade deals is another thing that we should expect to see happening soon. Additionally, the withdraw will shatter President Barack Obama's aim of strengthening US influence in Asia and could leave the Western world's trade agenda in conflict.
To fully understand his plans for government workers, we should start with what he said during the campaign. Trump said that the workforce has many great and committed people and in the long run, a smaller federal workforce will mean a more honest and effective government in which it is harder to hide corruption.
According to Washington Post, these plans has been proposed several times in recent years. It aimed to cut down government running costs, but has never been implemented during President Obama's leadership. The likelihood of successful implementation of these plans is high considering that the congress is Republican-controlled.
Although the exact number of workers that will be reduced is still uncertain, the leading target on these plans is to reduce the workforce by 10 percent. Considering that only 15 percent of the federal workforce is based in the Washington area, the reductions would not only affect Washington but the whole nation.
Not all workers seem to be facing this hush truth since Donald Trump has expressed his plans increase the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and a stronger emphasis on border security. This move would translate into adding Border Patrol agents and hence increasing the number of federal workers in border security departments.
