With his contract expiring next season, Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors will be the most sought-after free agent in recent memory. While Curry has maintained that he is happy to be a Warrior, fans can't help but speculate that the splash brother may take his talents elsewhere.
Compared to current NBA salary standard, Stephen Curry signed a measly $44 million 4-year deal to stay with the Warriors. To be fair, though, that deal was signed before the ridiculous increase in television deals paved the way for a souped-up NBA salary. Also, that deal was signed after Curry has gone through a myriad of injuries that saw him sitting on the sidelines more often than him showing off his wizardry on the basketball court.
And that was before his first of two NBA MVP seasons. This year, though, the baby-faced assassin has been playing like he has something to prove. And he probably has. With the arrival of Kevin Durrant, who interestingly has gone through the ordeal that Curry is about to face, the Warriors just got better. The question, however, is: are they good enough to reclaim the title?
In an interview with The Mercury News, Curry said that he is not going to let the talks about free agency distract him. The sharp-shooter also stated that he wants to be back with the Warriors and he likes playing for Golden State. However, he threw a bone for fans to chew, "The rest of it is what we're gonna do this year."
The Warriors have an inside track for Curry's services since they have the cap space to sign Curry to a max contract. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Curry said: "It's hard to see myself anywhere else." However, in that same interview, he added: "curveballs happen all the time."
So there's still a chance, however, infinitesimal it is, that Curry might leave the Warriors. If the Warriors fail to win it all this year, the 2017 free agency would be set ablaze by speculation that the services of the deadliest shooter on the planet may be available.
For now, fans in the bay area can rest assured that Stephen Curry is solely focused on winning the 2016-2017 championship. And all of them are hoping against hope that the Golden State Warriors would get the job done this time. Because if the Warriors flop in the championship rounds, well, the chances of Stephen Curry not being in a Warriors uniform next season is just a curveball waiting to happen.
