Hollywood actress Lily Tomlin shared to the media that she and her partner, Jane Wagner, are finally contemplating about tying the knot after 42 years of being together - she never thought that she would live to see the day when her country openly welcomes same sex marriage under its roof, said Lily.
Lily Tomlin shared that their interest in matrimony was only ignited after hearing news that the Defense of Marriage Act has been deemed unconstitutional and its Proposition 8 abolished.
The long-term couple met in 1971 to collaborate for a comedy album and started dating ever since. "Frankly, I was pretty taken with her as soon as I saw her. We just sort of clicked. We became a couple right away." Now that the law can grant them legitimate marriage, they are more than happy to share another milestone in each other's arms.
"You don't really need to get married, but marriage is awfully nice," Tomlin told the press on Monday.
Additionally, Lily Tomlin, 74, shared that it was Wagner, 78, who brought up the issue, after seeing how marriage changed most of their friends for the better.
The veteran star also said after being asked whether they were opting for a traditional wedding, "No rings, no bridal dresses. Maybe we'll be dressed like chickens."
Early last year, Lily Tomlin actually said in an interview that marriage is for heterosexual couples only. "With the concept of marriage, I've been a little too flippant and I've said things like, 'I was hoping the gay community would come up with a better idea than imitating heterosexual marriage.'"
Today, she is very optimistic that if they do get married, they would become an exclusive partner for each other, giving them the assurance of fidelity and the peace and joy that comes along with it. "Everybody I know who got married, they say it really makes a difference. They feel very very happy about it."
"I guess if we had any kids, it would mean something more. Neither of us is religious, so that means nothing to us. I'm proud and happy for it, for people who want to be married. I suppose symbolically it would've been nice if we had gotten married for anybody who's interested," she continued.
"I know what a good heart she has, and how empathetic she is with all kinds of people and issues - she's so brilliant on top of it that she can voice these things. And she's as funny as she can possibly be. She makes me laugh," the veteran actress said about her partner before ending the interview.
