Onza Entertainment filed a lawsuit against NBC and Sony.It claimed that the concept of "Timeless" was stolen from Spanish drama "El Ministerio del Tiempo" (The Department of Time).NBC and Sony fight back and want to dismiss the lawsuit .
According to Deadline ,Onza Entertainment claims the series was "ripped off" from its copyrighted format El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Department of Time),which is also about a team of a woman and two men traveling the future to correct past's mistakes.
NBC and Sony responded to the lawsuit saying that time-travel topics are established television genre,while there may be similarities between the two, the concept is still different .NBC and Sony said,"Time travel is a well-established genre in all forms of media."
"Moreover, in many examples of the genre, the generic story line involves characters whose time travel alters the course of history, often preventing bad things from happening."They added.
"Timeless" is a time travel drama series following the adventure of an unlikely team of a history professor,a scientist , and a soldier. Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke created the TV series starring Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, Goran Visnjic, and Paterson Joseph .
The TV series premiered on October 3,2016,which gained 7.597 million viewers.The ratings were lower for the next episodes.Despite that,on November 1,2016,NBC added 3 more episodes increasing the first season to 16 episodes.
"El Ministerio del Tiempo" (The Ministry of Time) is a Spanish fantasy drama series following the exploits of a patrol of the fictional Ministry of Time dealing with time travel incidents.The Ministry of Time is top-secret of the Spanish government .The patrols guard the " doors of time" to prevent people from time traveling.
Onza entertainment sued NBC Universal and Sony Pictures Entertainment for breach of contract and copyright infringement.It says that they had negotiations with Sony to produce an American version of the said Spanish drama.Onza is seeking a jury trial for the case seeking compensatory damages and profits.
