Wentworth Miller reveals he's gay in a letter rejecting the invitation of the director of St. Petersburg International Film Festival.
The 41-year old Prison Break star makes his sexuality public for the first time through his reply to the director, in which he spoke strongly against the current situation of the LGBT community in Russia and how the government is holding them by the neck. As posted in GLAAD's website, Wentworth Miller's letter read:
Dear Ms. Averbakh:
Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes.
However, as a gay man, I must decline.
I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.
Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I'll be free to make a different choice. Until then.
Wentworth Miller
To add more to the recent string of Putin and Russia's government laws against the LGBT, just last month, another was passed and implemented, "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations around minors," which includes discussions and relationships between the LGBT in the presence of children.
The British actor is another one taking a stand against the treatment of the Motherland against gay people, which also includes Madonna and Lady Gaga who recently tweeted "The Russian government is criminal. Oppression will be met with revolution. Russian LGBTs you are not alone. We will fight for your freedom...Why didn't you arrest me when you had the chance, Russia? Because you didn't want to answer to the world?"
The controversial laws are calling attention for a boycott this coming 2014 Olympics as well as the controversial anti-vodka movement around the world.
