After his wife's sudden death in April 2016, Patton Oswalt shares his journey as a single father to his 7-year-old daughter, Alice. Oswalt talked about his struggle and the "terror" he felt while facing the reality of becoming a single parent.
Patton Oswalt, 47, a comedian, voiced out his thoughts through an essay published in GQ on Saturday. He remembered his wife, Michelle McNamara, who died at age 46, as "the point person, researcher, planner, and expediter."
Oswalt admitted that he once thought of sending his daughter away to his relatives, believing that it would be for the better. However, after some moments of self-realization, he quoted that he will eventually master the role after series of training and practice.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, he compared the emotion to "an epic film" where the walk-on character needs to make progress even when the lead dies. Although Oswalt struggles to adapt to his new role, he was convinced that he needs to keep going for the sake of Alice.
"I'm going to keep going forward, looking stupid and clumsy and inexperienced at first, then eventually getting it, until the next jolt comes, and the next floor drops out from under me until there are no more floors," he wrote.
Meanwhile, US Weekly listed some proofs of his confounding experiences as a single father. Like the typical less-than-stellar fathers, Oswalt tried and failed in fulfilling his duties and responsibilities. Nevertheless, he did not miss the point where he could do everything for his daughter.
It was reported that McNamara's death was not yet determined. In a previous interview, Oswalt suspected that the cause of her death may be due to an overdose.
On being a father, Patton Oswalt did not miss to encourage single fathers who are on the same track as him. Share your thoughts on the comments below!
