A day in the beach in Russia is made exciting as a hovercraft suddenly appeared, startling and scaring thousands of beach goers in Mechnikovo, Kaliningrad.
The 187-foot long hovercraft was seen gently passing through the sand, a few feet above the mats and chairs of the people. Witnesses reported hearing a loud, "terrible roar" and seeing huge waves seconds before the hovercraft made its appearance.
According to the Russian defense ministry statement, the drill is a legitimate and on-schedule practice. Andrey Bespaly, speaking for the Baltic Fleet Western military district, said, ""Docking at the beach is a regular practice, what we don't know is what people were doing at the beach, which is within the military firing range."
Bespaly told the Russian newspaper, Komsomolskaya Pravda, that the drill is a "normal procedure". Apparently, the troops have been doing military tactical drills along the beach for the past few months.
The hovercraft is among Russia's Zubr-class landing vehicles. The Zubr is one of the largest hovercraft models specifically designed for military purposes. The vehicle can support as much as 130 tons of cargo and as many as 500 troops. The Zubrs were built in St. Peterburg and some units are being used by navy forces of Greece, China, and Ukraine.
While the hovercraft is practicing its navigation, Russian soldiers rounded up the people on the beach and told them to stay away from the shore during the course of the drill. Afterwards, the cordon surrounding the area was removed and the people were told to commence with their activities.
Although the military has made it clear that the drill was just a practice, some onlookers were not satisfied. There have been reports that the hovercraft, which was seen gliding a few inches above the water, was carrying paratroopers to an unknown destination.
