The Hawaii Shark attack which took place last week ends the life of the 20-year old German woman who got her arm bitten off while snorkeling 50 yards off Palauea Beach.
Jana Lutteropp has been on life support since the freak accident and has been battling her way through surviving. Sadly, the attack finally claims her life last Wednesday. She is the first to die from a Hawaii shark attack since 2004. Her family, who's been with her since the tragedy, finally speaks out and chooses to recall Jana as a strong person.
Jana's mother, Jutta Lutteropp, and sister, Julia Broeske describes her as "a very beautiful, strong young woman who was always laughing, and we will forever remember her that way." They relate last Wednesday, "Jana fought hard to stay alive. However, we are sad to say that she lost her fight today." They have also been grateful for the outpour of love and support they've been getting from the Maui community. "We appreciate all the support from the Maui community, as well as the prayers and thoughts from around the world and in Germany," they say and continue, "We especially want to thank the wonderful caregivers and everyone at Maui Memorial Medical Center."
Before the Hawaii shark attack, Jana has just finished her year as an au pair and decided to take a vacation in the Maui beach. A California teacher who was also on vacation heard her screaming for her life when the tragedy struck. Two of Jana's male friends hurried in coming to her aid as well. She was said to have been passing in and out once ashore saying, "I'm going to die".
A day after the attack, the beach reopened. Four days after, a 16-year old surfer was bit by a shark across his legs. Surprisingly, the fatality rate of shark attacks in the U.S remain at only 2%.
The Maui officials have stated that they are going to devote the next two years studying shark movements in the area.
