"Last Tango in Paris" was a 1972 movie starring Maria Schneider and Marlon Brando in the lead role. It was a highly-acclaimed film that earned Marlon Brando a Best Actor award. Bernardo Bertolucci was nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards.
The film became controversial when Schneider claimed in 2006 that the rape scene was not included in the script. She was told only about it during the actual take. Lead actress Maria Schneider received praises for her acting.
She was unable to fight back and refuse to do the scene. The 19-year-old actress at that time was emotionally destroyed because of the incident. She turned to drugs and alcohol which she claimed was due to the film.
Bertolucci had an interview with College Tour in 2013 on the effect of the rape scene to Maria Schneider. He said that the controversial scene was in the script but the butter which was used as a lubricant was not. It was only thought of during the actual shoot. Purposely, the director wants to see her reaction as a girl and not as an actress.
After three years, the controversy surfaced again after the interview was uploaded on YouTube. A writer wrote about the video stating that Bernardo Bertolucci admitted that the scene was non-consensual as per The Guardian.
The admission from the Italian director has sparked outrage from celebrities and ordinary people alike. They want the director who was claimed to have conspired with Brando to execute the rape scene without the consent of Schneider to be stripped of his awards.
Actress Rachel Wood, who was a rape victim, Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans and many other celebrities, condemned what Bertolucci and the "Apocalypse Now" actor did.
"Last Tango In Paris" will be forever remembered. No longer by Maria Schneider, because she died long ago but by the people offended by such heartless act. Stay tuned for more controversial celebrity news.
