"Luke I am your father!" How's that for the biggest cinematic reveal ever? The latest from the rumor mill is that in "Star Wars Episode 8," Luke Skywalker is about to train a new Jedi who is descended from Emperor Palpatine himself. And that new Jedi is Rey.
According to The Huffington Post, Luke Skywalker is going to train the Rey. In case everyone forgets, Rey is the newest heroine in the "Star Wars" canon. And she happens to be Palpatine's granddaughter. The movie "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ended with Rey returning Luke Skywalker's lightsaber (technically the lightsaber was Anakin's) on an unknown planet. What is surprising is the look of Luke Skywalker when she saw Rey. And that look says the Jedi Master recognizes the girl.
This doesn't prove Rey's lineage, however. Looking back at the fight scene between Rey and Kylo Ren, Rey uses a fighting style that has never been used by the Jedi in any of the other "Star Wars" film. In fact, according to Slashfilm, Rey's fight style is reminiscent of Darth Sidious fighting style when he battled Yoda in "Star Wars: The Revenge Of The Sith."
Of course, Rey has no way of knowing how to fight like that. But her being so strong in the Force and her feelings heightened by emotions thinking her friend Finn is dead, she may have tapped into the Dark Side of the Force. Thus, the instinctive Dark Side fighting style.
All "Star Wars" films to date have a theme of good versus evil, Dark Side against the Light Side, and Skywalker Versus Palpatine. The themes of the movies always go full circle. They start out from darkness ending with the triumph of light.
This time, though, there is Snoke and Kylo Ren on one side, and Luke Skywalker and Rey on the other side. Obviously, Kylo Ren has the blood of Skywalker. And if Rey has the blood of Palpatine, then there goes the Skywalker versus Palpatine theme. However, it is interesting to note that if Kylo Ren is the one at the Dark Side and Rey is on the Light Side, then the "Star Wars Episode 8" comes to full circle.
Fans of the "Star Wars" canon will have to wait until December 15, 2017, to confirm whether Rey is really a Palpatine. But Rey soon training under Luke Skywalker is all but a foregone conclusion. Regardless, if Rey turns out to be the granddaughter of Palpatine, then that certainly is going to be the biggest cinematic reveal of all time. Move over, "Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back."
