An 8-year old boy, whose name has not been released, intentionally shot 87-year old caregiver Marie Smothers to the head while she was watching TV last Thursday in Louisiana.
While investigations initially led authorities to believe that it was an accident, after the 8-year old said that he was just playing with the firearm, police now believe otherwise. It turned out that the child was playing Grand Theft Auto just minutes before the killing. The game, which was restricted for 17 year old and above, awarded the player with points every time it kills people. Marie was pronounced dead at the scene of the crime.
"It's a shock to me just as much as anyone else because everything has been so peaceful, Mrs. Smothers was a fine tenant, never give us no trouble, called all the time," mentions trailer park owner Gerald Methvin. A man believed to be the 8-year old kid's dad says the gun belonged to Smothers, which in turn raised even more questions. "Where did she have the gun, where did he see the gun, was it in his eyesight? That's the thought that goes through my head," neighbor Johnnie Scott claims.
The incident came as a shock, as the boy and the caregiver had a good relationship together, even at times sharing the bed. "By accounts of relatives of the victim, as well as friends of the family, the victim and the juvenile had a normal, loving, relationship," as stated by a statement made by the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office.
The 8-year old killer will not be charged, sentenced or put to jail as the law in Louisiana states that no children below 10 years old will be acquitted of criminal responsibilities. He was released to his parents the same night after the tragic killing.
Autopsy results have yet to be released and investigators are looking into more details of the crime.
