Netflix has released the fourth trailer for their new series, "A Series Of Unfortunate Events". In this latest appeal to viewers, the streaming video service stays consistent with its unorthodox tactic of asking viewers to "please... watch something else."
The new clip starts with Lemony Snicket (Patrick Warburton) saying a-matter-of-factly, "If you're looking for stories with happy endings, those are streaming elsewhere... I would advise all our viewers to watch something more pleasant instead." It proceeds to show excerpts from the show revealing part of the storyline, interspersed with slides saying "Look away" and "You've been warned."
This follows the same message from the first trailer of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" released in October 2016 featuring Snicket in an extended monolog. In it, Snicket explains that "The story of the Baudelaire orphans is so upsetting and so utterly unnerving that the entire crew is suffering from low morale... Look away and avoid the magical whimsy and whimsical magic of what's to come."
In the second trailer released in early November, the main characters were finally shown, with much teasing about the iconic Count Olaf, played this time by Neil Patrick Harris. The tongue-in-cheek synopsis states, "Meet the star of a new Netflix series telling the story of a very handsome actor and three selfish and ungrateful orphans who refuse to give him the enormous fortune their dead parents left behind."
True to form, "A Series of Unfortunate Events" third trailer is accompanied with a message that says, "We regretfully present you with the official trailer, a word which here means a collection of the unhappy happenings surrounding the lives of the three Baudelaire orphans and one despicable Count Olaf," then proceeds to encourage the viewer to browse for cat videos "(f)or the sake of your mental well-being and overall enjoyment of your internet browsing experience."
Will this reverse psychology work? Netflix will find out on Jan. 13 when it releases "A Series of Unfortunate Events."
