New Monopoly Token: New Monopoly Cat Token Replaces Iron In Monopoly Board Game; The 'Purr-fect' Avatar For High-Stakes Negotiation [VIDEO & REPORT]

A new Monopoly token, a metallic cat, made its debut in Monopoly after nearly seven months of winning an internet-wide poll, replacing the iron permanently, a Yahoo! News report stated Wednesday.

The metallic cat will be included in new Monopoly board game boxes and is to make its official public debut at the 2013 Internet Cat Video Festival at the Minnesota State Fair late Wednesday.

The new Monopoly token won a spot in the board game last February in an online poll where Monopoly players were surveyed and asked to choose among a helicopter, a robot, a guitar, a diamond ring, and a cat as the new Monopoly token to be introduced this year. The cat won by 31 percent, and it will be serving as the permanent replacement of the iron as stated by the Hasbro toy company, BallerStatus reported.

"We know that cat lovers around the world will be happy to welcome the new cat token into the Monopoly game," Senior Vice President and Global Brand Leader for Hasbro Gaming Eric Nyman said. "While we're a bit sad to see the iron go, the cat token is a fantastic choice by the fans and we have no doubt it will become just as iconic as the original tokens."

According to Gizmodo, the cat serves as the player avatar for high-stakes negotiation in the Atlantic City real estate, adding that the new Monopoly taken is a product of "democracy in action."

The iron token, one of the original metal tokens, is to depart after 78 years of being a Monopoly board game token, during the debut of the new Monopoly token.

Yahoo! News added that two other tokens, the boot and the wheelbarrow, were also at risk of being replaced permanently earlier, but managed to survive due to the decent number of people, who voted for their stay.

Monopoly started in 1935 with only the iron, shoe, race car, top hat, battleship, and thimble board game tokens. In the 1950s, the game had included new Monopoly tokens namely: the dog, a wheelbarrow, and a retired man on a horseback, replacing some of the original pieces such as the rocking horse, a purse, and a lantern.

The cannon and the sack of money, which debuted in 1999 after a player voting poll that time, have also retired from the gaming board.

Regionalized token pieces were also made available in the past. A 2000 Canadian version of the board game had a beaver token while an Australian edition had a koala piece at one point.
