While conjoined twins were considered as freak shows in the past, a pair has caught the eyes of the early day vaudeville and movie industry. The Hilton Sisters, the beautiful and talented conjoined twins who made a mark in the entertainment industry back in the early days of the 1920s, are back to tell once again their nearly-forgotten-story of fame and bizarre endeavors through the new documentary 'Bound by Flesh.'
'Bound by Flesh' features the lives of Daisy and Violet Hilton, who were literally bounded by flesh, and how they made a name for themselves despite the early time prejudices on their appearance. The documentary also discusses how the two emerged to become big stars who worked with Charlie Chaplin, Harry Houdini, and many other movie actors and actresses in the '20s.
The director of the documentary, Leslie Zemeckis said that the conjoined twins stars lost their popularity after the vaudeville days were over and began to engage into stripping, the main reason why he found out about these use-to-be famous stars since he was initially planning to create a documentary for early day burlesque performers.
They could even be regarded as The Hilton Sisters as the Olsen twins of the 1920s for many reasons than one.
One of the greatest resemblance of the two famous twins was the fact that both pairs began to bask under the limelight while they were still babies. Several reviews noted that the step-father - the one who had bought them from their mother who sold them thinking that they would die as infants - of the Hilton Sisters put them on display and even sold postcards of them for many people were very curious about their bizarre appearance during that time.
Growing up, the stepmother of the conjoined twins taught them how to play musical instruments, sing, and perform for the "freak" shows at various fairs.
Later on, the conjoined twins rose to stardom as they starred in their own movie (the now cult phenomenal) 'Freaks.' Nevertheless, their career plummeted for the worst and they decided to go back to doing sideshows, but fairs have already greatly diminished its popularity amongst their patrons, leaving the Hilton Sisters to an obscure path towards a rather sordid future.
'Bound by Flesh' is currently being shown at several film festivals.
