New Orleans Baby Shot, 18-Year-Old Babysitter Injured; Toddler's Father Says 'This Is A Bad Dream I Haven't Woken Up From Yet' [VIDEO & REPORT]

A New Orleans 1-year-old baby was shot dead while her 18-year-old nanny got injured after a random open fire in the streets Thursday night, Police said.

The baby, Londyn Samuel, was being carried by her caretaker at around 8:30 p.m. on their way home, when someone randomly opened fire on the 2800 block of South Saratoga Street. Police said that a bullet hit the toddler in the chest after passing through the nanny's back.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, the 1-year-old baby was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Minutes after the incident, the New Orleans baby's father, Keion Reed, 20, received a call from the nanny, who is still left unnamed, saying that she and his toddler had been shot.

"In the back of my head, this is a bad dream I haven't woken up from yet," Keion told NBC News in an interview.

"These men took a baby's life tonight, and wounded a young woman. They don't deserve to walk freely among the people of New Orleans. They must answer for what they've done." Superintendent Ronal Serpas addressed the unknown perpetrators of the crime.

"When these men opened fire, it was still early, and people were still out and about in the neighborhood. We need people to come forward, and tell us what they know," Serpas added.

Meanwhile, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu appealed to everyone on Friday to speak up if they have information about the men responsible for the New Orleans baby shooting. "This community has got to stand up and with force and power speak with one voice and say this is unacceptable."

Landrieu also said that there will be an evening vigil at the intersection where the baby was shot and killed.

USA Today reported that the nanny of the toddler is now stable. The grandparents of Samuel even said that they already met the nanny in the hospital and confirmed that she is now in good condition.

On the other hand, the relatives of the baby described her to NOLA.com.

"She was playful. She was a joy and a blessing," her aunt Ashley Samuel said.

Crimestoppers has offered a $5,000 reward to people, who can provide pertinent information about the men who shot the baby and her nanny.

Police issued surveillance video images of the perpetrators walking towards the area of the shooting incident.
