Chobani recall is not a formal recall, but Chobani is pulling several cups of the popular Greek yogurt from store shelves after customers complained of illness, presence of molds, and potential contamination, Inquisitr reported Wednesday.
According to Christian Post, the Chobani recall affects an estimated five percent of the Greek yogurt products on store shelves coming from its Idaho facility, leading to a tirade of backlashing from the company's customers.
"Today my husband informed me that a Chobani Strawberry yogurt had exploded in our refrigerator, which he found strange. I had noticed of lately that some of the flavors (i.e. raspberry) [were] very runny and peach overly thick and lumpy," one customer posted on Facebook, adding, "A few days ago I woke up very sick to my stomach, which has still not completely dissipated. We, as consumers deserve an explanation. My refrigerator is stocked with Chobani with a date code of October. A recall is in order."
Chobani reportedly stated that they conducted an investigation and discovered that a type of mold that affects dairy products may be the one to blame for the "Swelling or bloating" in cups.
Although most of the company's customers regard the incident as a recall, Chobani denies the use of the word "recall" in its statements and announcements nationwide causing their customers to further criticize them. Chobani patrons also commented that the company did not act fast enough to ensure that the low-quality products be removed from stores right away.
Meanwhile, the New Berlin, N.Y.-based company did not announce the number of cups and the variety of the products that were affected.
A representative for Kroger, Keith Dailey, said that Chobani had issued a product withdraw last Friday. "It was not a food safety issue."
Other customers also raised their concerns via Twitter. One person described the cup she got as "unnervingly fizzy" while another said that the strawberry-flavored cup she bought tasted "really old."
Chobani responded earlier saying, ""Here at Chobani, nothing is more important to us than the quality of our products and the safety and satisfaction of our customers. Recently, we heard quality concerns surrounding certain cups, which were experiencing swelling or bloating."
The company then added another statement a few days after. "Our thorough investigation has identified a type of mold commonly found in the dairy environment. The product in question is less than 5% of our production and is limited to cups produced at our Idaho facility, which accounts for only one third of our production capacity."
According to S&P Capital IQ, Chobani had an estimated $244 million in revenue in 2010.
Now the company is asking for customers to contact its customer service team at care@chobani.com if they have affected cups in order for them to be replaced right away.
