Google has a sweet new addition to its mobile operating system, Android, by introducing the latest version and naming it after KitKat, in honor of the candy bar that the developers used as sustenance while working on the updates.
While several Android users have been up and about speculating the names of the new OS (several expecting a Key Lime pie), representatives at Google remark that they "could not have chosen a better name" for the Android K release, the tasty candy bar KitKat having been a favorite among developers and the team even since the early days of Android.
Android KitKat follows the 2009 Google tradition of naming the system version after sweet treats, but this has been the first time that the name is a trademark product, thereby requiring KitKat creators and producer, Nestle, to sign onboard with the project.
And the Swiss Company did-responding with producing 50 million KitKat bars branded with the little green Android robot on the packaging, giving chances to win prizes. A number of robot-shaped KitKats have also been released to circulation, as a little surprise to customers.
KitKat has also released a sweet new promotional video, which spoofs how Apple faultlessly and breathlessly markets their products:
Statements from Google say that naming the new OS after the delicious candy bar to form a joint partnership with Nestle had not originally been the intention; it was merely a team favorite, and several of them had even remained oblivious to the fact that it was owned by Nestle. The Android team kept the new name under wraps, even continuously calling it "Key Lime Pie," to keep with the presumed name, for months.
Android has been naming its developments after desserts since 2009: Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jellybean being the former variations.
There has been no release date as of yet, however, some observers say it is expected to come out this fall.
