A spring high school student was charged with murder in death of classmate while three other teens got injured, Chron reported Thursday.
According to the report, the 17-year-old suspect, Luis Alonzo Alfaro, appeared in probable-cause court Thursday morning. He is currently being held in the Harris County Jail on $150,000 bond.
The teen was said to be the culprit behind the knife attack in the school hallway just outside the cafeteria. Thousands of students, staff and faculty members were lockdown in offices and classrooms while the incident was ongoing.
By Around 10 a.m., Spring Independent School District officials sent out emergency voice and text message to parents, explaining that a bloody knife attack became grave serious.
"There was a fatality," the alerts stated. "Three students have been transported to the hospital for injuries."
Around noon, authorities called the attention of three Spring ISD students for questioning. The investigators mainly focused on one student while the other two were later identified as witnesses to the bloody school brawl.
Students were able to meet their parents and families in the football stadium by lunch time after the incident. Meanwhile, Joshua Broussard's aunt confirmed that the 17-year-old had died from the altercation.
Spring ISD junior Juwan Hill, 16, said he witnessed some students carrying Broussard, who was then holding his neck.
"They were all screaming and crying," Hill said during the prayer vigil in the evening. "There was blood all over the place."
On Wednesday afternoon, Luis Alonzo Alfaro, 17, was charged with murder for pulling a knife during the brawl and stabbing Broussard to death.
Reports stated that under Texas law, Alfaro is old enough to be considered and punished as an adult. The preliminary court hearing is set to happen on Friday.
Meanwhile, Deavean Bazile, 16, was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital after obtaining multiple injuries on his abdomen while the other two injured students were rushed to Houston Northwest Medical Center. One of the two had been discharged by Wednesday afternoon while the other was transferred to Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute and is said to be in good condition as of late, hospital officials said.
Spring ID spokeswoman Karen Garrison said that classes have been suspended and are set to resume on Monday morning.
"We will be upping security as well," Garrison added.
On the other hand, parents raised their concern earlier regarding the insufficient information the school has provided them with during the attack on Wednesday.
Spring ISD Superintendent Ralph Draper explained that before they could communicate with parents they need to immediately secure the school first before anything else.
In the evening of Wednesday, over 200 people attended the prayer vigil at Spring Baptist Church beside the high school campus.
"We're a diverse community and we came here to pray for our community. We are not going to heal overnight," the church's senior pastor Mark Estep said. "Spring is a family. We know each other and we care about each other."
