Transformers 4 is set to be released next year, on June 27, 2014 under the title Transformers: Age of Extinction. Mecha fans as well as robot aficionados will have a field day.
Director Michael Bay, who had once reportedly stated that he will never go back to the series, has evidently turned around on his previous statement. The upcoming film was revealed through the release of a promotional poster last Tuesday, September 3, which features the number 4 with half a Decepticon insignia, the artwork suggesting that much of the film will take place in a desert.
What's New?
In an industry that seems to have more remakes, film adaptations and an endless run of sequels and prequels and sexquels (Fast and Furious having recently released their sixth film) and what have you, producers claim that the new Transformers installment will "thrill the fans to no end" with several new exhilarating elements:
Dinobots
In addition to familiar characters such as Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, a set of new characters will appear in the film in the form of Dinosaur robots, whose alternative forms will be the world's "coolest" cars, among them several models of China cars, making the upcoming film a must-watch for car enthusiasts everywhere.
The Dinos themselves are Autobots, and the gang includes Grimlock (a Tyrannosaurus Rex), Slag (a Triceratops), Sludge (an Apatosaurus), Snarl (A Stegasaurus), and Swoop (a Pterodactyl). The characters are present in the popular 1985 Japanese animated series, and have mostly been portrayed as childlike creatures with primitive speech patterns, mainly for comic relief but whether or not the live-action incarnations will be equally goofy remains to be seen.
New Cast
The film will also feature a completely new cast, which producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura explains will make a smooth transition from the Labeouf/Sam Witwicki storyline. Actors named to star in the film are Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Nicola Peltz, Sophia Myles, T.J. Miller, as well as Chinese actor Han Geng in his English-speaking debut, and several Chinese bit actors who have won their roles in the film through a reality show.
Production is currently filming in China.
