Eleven songs by Lin Manuel Miranda will be featured in a musical film. To be produced by Sony Pictures, "Vivo" is about an adventurous monkey. It slated to hit theaters on December 18, 2020.
The story focuses on a capuchin monkey "with a thirst for adventure and a passion for music". The monkey "makes a treacherous passage from Havana to Miami to fulfill his destiny." It has been in the works for years now as Dream works Animation started developing it after Lin's In the Heights became a success. Entertainment Weekly reports that "The Croods" director, Kirk DeMicco, will be at the helm. Lin's "In the Heights" colleague, Quiara Alegría Hudes, will pen the script. Lisa Stewart will be the producer joined by Laurence Mark as exec producer.
True to his lyrics in "Hamilton: An American Musical," Lin seems to be "non-stop" as "Vivo" is the fifth of a series of consecutive projects. Broadway World has the growing list of films. For 2016, it was the it Disney movie, Moana. 2018 has "Mary Poppins Returns" on Christmas day. Another project is a collaboration with Allan Menken for a new version of "The Little Mermaid." His music will be in the "Kingkiller Chronicles" for which he is also the creative lead for both the film and the TV series. His pre-Hamilton play, "In the Heights" will be turned into a film under the Weinstein Company. All these are besides the on-going and growing production of Hamilton, currently showing in Broadway and Chicago, and will soon be in London too.
To date, Lin has been reaping awards across artistic groups. He has won a Pulitzer Prize, two Grammys, an Oscar, several Tonys, an Emmy and a MacArthus Fellowship. He has also been nominated for the Golden Globe Awards. Fans are excited to see which awards he will be harvesting when Hamilton crosses the pond.
