Nicki Minaj, producer, and three other writers are to face a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by a reclusive electro musician on Sept. 10 Tuesday, MSN reported Wednesday.
Hip-hop star Nicki Minaj is currently walking on thin ice after electro star Clive Tanaka filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the famous girl rapper along with producer RedOne and three other writers behind Minaj's sensational hit 'Starships.'
According Chicago Tribune, Tanaka filed suit against the former 'American Idol' judge at U.S. District Court in Chicago, claiming that portions of his 2011 track 'Neu Chicago' were copied by the defendants in making Nicki Minaj's mega-hot 'Starships.'
Zap2It reported that Tanaka's lawyer, Christopher Niro said, "We believe they are similar to the point that it is nearly impossible for it to be a coincidence."
Prior to filing the lawsuit, the reclusive electro star posted a mash-up of his track 'Neu Chicago' and Minaj's 'Starships' on Soundcloud so fans could hear and identify whether the alleged similarities and copyright infringement were true.
In court documents, Tanaka said that his 2011 track had received substantial airplay in both Europe and the United States, adding, "They [the defendants] had a very good opportunity to hear it."
Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj's representative has yet to comment on the issue.
'Starships' is the lead single for Minaj's "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded" album, released on February 14, 2012 by Young Money, Universal Republic, and Cash Money.
The song was reportedly written by Nicki Minaj, Carl Falk, Wayne Hector, Nadir Khayat, and Rami Yacoub.
It is considered as one of the best-selling singles of all time to date, after making history by spending a total of 21 consecutive weeks in the US Billboard top ten.
