“Riverdale” has just released a brand new trailer which hints that viewers are in for a dark murder mystery when the show premieres next year. The CW series will put a twist on the “Archie” Comics world, and fans will see that everything is not as bright and sunny as it seems in the seemingly idyllic town.
In the new trailer, the body of a dead teenaged boy is seen in the water, and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) is very disturbed about it.
“A kid is dead Archie, and she’s telling you not to say anything,” he says to Archie (KJ Apa). Jughead can be seen spying on Archie and the young music teacher, Ms.Gundry (Sarah Habel), who tells the latter that she’s putting herself in his hands.
“I don’t know what I’m protecting,” says Archie.
“Riverdale” is certainly different from the “Archie” comics as executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly that the show is a bit more complex and “a little weirder than you might remember from the digest you bought at the supermarket.”
“We’re saying it’s a little bit like ‘Archie’ meets ‘Twin Peaks,’” said Aguirre-Sacasa.
Meanwhile, “90210” star Luke Perry, who plays Archie’s father in the series, told TVLine that the show reflects the times in so many ways.
“It’s very 21st-century, they really updated it,” said Perry. “Not just with the iPhones and stuff, but with who kids are in their heart and in their head now.”
According to the show’s official description, the summer’s events and his ending his relationship with Ms. Gundry will make Archie realize that he wants to pursue a career in music. Apart from this, the teen also has to deal with his fractured friendship with Jughead.
Archie will also be having some girl problems as Betty (Lili Reinhart), who has had a crush on him forever, will find a rival in Veronica (Camila Mendes), who just arrived from New York. Veronica will find it hard to resist Archie as she tries to maintain her friendship with Riverdale’s golden girl.
“Riverdale” premieres Thursday, Jan. 26 at 9 p.m on The CW.
