A rare $4 coin made out of pure gold will be sold at an auction on September 23.
Called a Coiled Hair Stella gold coin, it had originally been wrought from way back in 1880, contains six grams of gold. It has been called a classic work of art, with one side carrying the portrait of the Lady Liberty. It was designed to resemble the more popular coins of the day, those that were found in France and around most of Europe, but the public had apparently seen no such demand for the coins, and so they were not fully circulated. There are less than a dozen of these coins in existence today, most of which are in private collections, if not in public view at institutions that display them.
At full price, the single coin is worth up to 1.5 million dollars. The action will be held in Los Angeles, by Bonhams.
The $4 Coiled Hair Stella Coil however, does not hold the title of being the most valuable coin in the world (yet; who knows what will happen at the auction?). The 1933 Saitin-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle holds the title of being the most valuable coin in the world, sold at $7.5 million dollars at an auction in 2002. It was pulled from circulation following the great depression, forcing people to turn in theirs, and all the coins were known to be melted into gold bars-with the exception of those that remain today.
But take heart, as there may be the possibility that a coin in your pocket is worth thousands of dollars. There are a remarkable number of error coins in circulation today, with some of them costing up to about $35,000 dollars, and for only just the slightest of errors in the minting process. Looks like the first place to look for treasure is in your pocket!
