If you are thinking about becoming a freelancer, you have to think twice and think hard. Leaving an office job to start freelancing is not as easy as you think it should be.
Some people have this misconception that freelancing would give them all the money that they can get from an office job and more, while also giving them ample time for themselves.
Although freelancers can freely adjust their schedules compared to people who have a strict 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule, that does not mean that they can do as they please when it comes to deadlines.
If that did not scare you and you are still intent on becoming a freelancer, there are some things that you can do to make the transition from a desk job to freelancing much easier.
Do your research and do it right. Do not just get into the freelancing business without looking into what pays more and what area can benefit from your expertise. Look into what skills are currently in demand in the market and match them with what you can offer.
Know your client. If you have chosen what kind of service you can provide, then the next step would be studying who your clients will be. Choosing clients can make or break a freelancing job. You do not want to end up having to sloppily finish a subject just because you thought you can offer your clients something that you are not capable of doing.
Do not be scared of asking for a down payment. Whether you like what you are doing or not, at the end of the day, you want to get paid for it. Freelancing is a bit tricky since it usually is not under any regulatory body. When accepting projects, do not forget to set the price and tell your clients to give down payment. A down payment will ensure that your client will not abandon you if they see someone they like more.
