La Jolla Shootings: Man Guns Two La Jolla Residents In Half-Mile Apart Incidents! Suspect Arrested After Scuffle With Second Victim? [VIDEO & REPORT]

La Jolla shootings - a man reportedly shot two La Jolla residents in two half-mile apart incidents, one identified as his brother-in-law, early Wednesday, authorities said. The suspect was arrested after a scuffle with his second victim, ABC 10News reported Sept. 18.

Two separate half-mile apart La Jolla shootings wounded two men Wednesday morning, police said, adding that that one of them was the ex-wife brother of the suspect, who has been arrested following a scuffle with his second victim.

Hans Peterson, 49, is suspected of open firing into a 5700 block of Waverly Drive home around 3 a.m., which wounded a 53-year-old man, San Diego police said.

SDPD Public Affairs Lt. Kevin Mayer said the victim was hit by a bullet on his upper body, adding that he was awakened by the gunshots and hurried to get out of bed to check where the sound was coming from.

San Diego Police Officer Dino Delimitros said a man in dark clothing standing in the backyard of the victim shot him, noting that the wound the victim obtained from the La Jolla shooting was not life-threatening.

Meanwhile, a separate La Jolla shooting happened before 7 a.m. in the 1400 block of Cottontail Lane, half-mile southwest of the first shooting's site.

Police identified a 43-year-old man wounded on his upper body by a gunshot, and they also found the suspect with a head injury.

Inquisitr reported that the second victim managed to fight back against the suspect, who was later on identified as his sister's ex-husband.

Both victims are currently being treated at local hospitals and are expected to survive from the injuries they got from the La Jolla shootings.

Mayer said in a statement that the suspect behind the second shooting was 48-year-old Hans Peterson, who was treated at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for head injuries, but was taken to police headquarters afterwards for questioning.

It is still unclear whether Peterson was the same suspect responsible for the earlier La Jolla shooting, according to Mayer.

Although police withheld the names of the victims, their neighbors identified them as Steven Dowdy, the victim in the first shooting, and Ron Fletcher, the second victim in the La Jolla shootings.

Neighbors said that Steven Dowdy was a University of California San Diego professor and researcher. The 53-year-old was reportedly once a next door neighbor toe Peterson, and the two have invested in the same company, which went bankrupt last year, UT San Diego reported.

On the other hand, Ron Fletcher is a Mission Beach-based real estate agent and property investor, and is reportedly the brother of Peterson's ex-wife, Bonnie.

Police have not yet identified the motive for the La Jolla shootings as of late.

Meanwhile, authorities said that two young girls were in Fletcher's home at the time of the shooting, but neither of them was harmed.

The neighborhood was identified by the police as a quite area, where crime rates are rather low and incidents such as this one is very unusual.

"Everybody knows everybody," Fletcher's neighbor, Bill Burke, said. "We keep pretty good tabs on one another."
