Being a great leader takes hard work and dedication, and some people have innate leadership skills, while others have to work harder to be good enough. However, there are ways on how to become a better leader, regardless of how long you’ve been running an organization or leading a team.
Here are some tips on how you can be a better leader today.
Be honest and admit it when you don’t have an answer
Even leaders get stumped every now and then, so admitting that you don’t know the answer is not a sign of weakness. When a good leader doesn’t have the answers, he goes out of his way to find it for his team.
Put away your smartphone
A good leader is engaged and in the moment when he or she is talking to the team. So put away your smartphone, as your teammates deserve to have your full attention.
Keep your composure at all times
A good leader knows that being calm and collected in the midst of chaos is the right thing to do, as team members tend to follow their leader’s cues. Angry or moody bosses tend to have sullen and unmotivated team members, so keep your composure when you’re in the workplace.
Share things that inspire you
It can be anything from a great article, an inspirational quote, a documentary, a movie, a TED talk, or a book. Share these things with your team as a way to spread positivity in the workplace.
Celebrate the team’s success
If your team just finished a huge project, celebrate it with an impromptu pizza or ice cream party, or a night out at the new bistro around the corner. Celebrating victories will keep your team motivated, and this will encourage them to be at their best on the next project.
Share the lessons that you learned
Pass along some of the knowledge that you gained over the years. Let your employees know more about you and how you became the leader that you are today.
