Violence has struck Chicago once again as a number of shootings killed three people and wounded 23 others, including a 3-year-old, based on the latest update on the Chicago shootings, USA Today reported Friday.
In the latest update on the Chicago shootings, three have been confirmed dead while 23 others were injured, including a 3-year-old boy, identified as Deonta "Tay-man" Howard, and two teens in the Chicago's South Cornell Square Park attack believed to be gang-related.
Police Superintendent Gary McCarthy said the culprit used an assault-style rifle with a high-capacity magazine in the shootings.
"They almost shot his whole face off," McCarthy said on the 3-year-old boy, adding that it was still a "miracle" that no one had apparently died in the initial attack.
The 3-year-old boy's grandmother, Semehca Nunn, said Friday that Howard had stabilized after his surgery. Little Deonta was reportedly wounded by a bullet that entered his ear and exited through his mouth. His uncle was also a victim of a shooting two weeks ago that apparently took his life.
Police said, none of the other victims in the park shooting suffered life threatening wounds.
Julian Harries, 22, a witness to the Cornell Square Park shootings, told the Chicago Sun-Times that dreadlocked men fired at him before firing at others from their gray sedan.
"They hit the light pole next to me, but I ducked down and ran into the house," Harris said. "They've been coming round here looking for people to shoot every night, just gang-banging stuff. It's what they do."
Police said the park shooting has stemmed from an on-going dispute between the Black P Stone Nation Gang and the Gangster Disciples.
Chicago Alderman Willie Cochran confirmed that police have talked to several residents near the area but had made no arrests as of late.
Meanwhile, other Chicago shootings ensued Thursday and early Friday leaving seven people wounded and three others dead. The murdered victims were identified as 36-year-old Johnny Tinsey, 25-year-old Rubin Austin, and a yet to be identified 29-year-old woman.
"Senseless and brazen acts of violence have no place in Chicago and betray all that we stand for," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Friday.
"The perpetrators of this crime will be brought to justice and prosecuted to the full extent of the law," Emmanuel said, adding that he is encouraging the community to come forward with any information or pertinent details about the shootings.
The Mayor also asked "everyone in Chicago to continue their individual efforts to build stronger communities where violence has no place."
Based on the FBI's crime statistics released this week, Chicago has replaced New York as the murder capital of the country with 500 documented murders as opposed to NYC's 419 in 2012. Statistics shows that Chicago murder are actually down by 22% from 2012 since at this point in 2012 389 have been document dead compared to the present killings with 305 recorded deaths.
