Some celebrities who are trying to hide from the paparazzi and from the curious stares of passers-by will usually opt to wear a pair of dark sunglasses in an attempt to stay incognito in public. While others would go to extreme lengths to protect their privacy, such as wearing a wig and a fake mustache in public, Bill Gates has a more subtle way to blend in with everyone when he’s out and about.
During his fifth Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) earlier this week, the Microsoft co-founder was asked if he ever disguises himself when he’s out in public. Gates revealed that he sometimes wears a hat to stay incognito.
“For example when I did college tours with my son I wanted the focus to be totally on him,” the 61-year-old continued. “A lot less people recognize me when I have a hat on or else they realize I am trying to be incognito.”
Gates said that when he does get recognized, people are mostly “super nice” so he doesn’t feel bothered if he gets noticed while trying to keep a low profile.
Fans likened Gates to an actual superhero, with one fan saying that he couldn’t believe that the philanthropist’s hat disguise actually works.
“We all made fun of Marvel movies for using this as a disguise but here we are,” said Redditor jaydid.
Gates is not the only tech celebrity who prefers to use hats as a disguise. Apparently, the late Steve Jobs once wore a strange hat to a meeting back in 2010. According to NY Magazine, Jobs came into Pranna restaurant wearing what the source described as “a very funny hat—a big top hat kind of thing.”
Apart from answering questions about his favorite vacation destinations, social media, society, philanthropy, and technology, Gates also revealed where he sees himself in 15 years on the Reddit AMA.
“I will be 76 at that time. Hopefully a grandfather,” he said. “I hope I can still type fast enough to do Reddit sessions without someone transcribing for me.”
