The San Diego Chargers were reported to be extremely devastated when news of Paul Oliver's suicide came in. The former San Diego Charger defensive back allegedly took his own life on Tuesday night. Oliver died from a self-inflicted gunshot, authorities concluded. The suicide leaves teammates, coaches, as well as the rest of the world stunned. Paul Oliver was 29 years old and had stopped playing for the NFL 2 years prior to the incident.
Paul Oliver was a Charger from 2007 to 2011, and played with Quentin Jammer, who now plays for the Broncos.
Jammer, when interviewed by USA TODAY sports, considered Oliver a good guy and a great friend. Jammer also expressed surprise upon hearing of the suicide as Oliver "just didn't seem like that type of guy". He concluded with saying that no one really knows what other people are going through, and what could be going on in their lives or inside their heads.
Official reports say Oliver's death was due to a handgun shot that he allegedly fired at around 6:45 P.M. on Tuesday. The location of the wound was not confirmed.
Oliver will be remembered as a talented player. While the Chargers did release him at the start of the 2011 season, they later resigned him after other players on the team were sidelined by injuries. Paul Oliver also had a playing stint with the New Orleans Saints.
Oliver is survived by his family and two children. Another close friend, Eric Weddle, expressed devastation and talked about his many memories with Oliver. He also wished he would have reached out more, and maybe even helped Oliver with whatever he was going through.
Paul Oliver, during his time with the Chargers, played in 57 games. He started 12 times out of the 57. The man became a free agent in the 2012 season.
