The United Food and Commercial Workers Local union, representing approximately 6,000 Food4Less employees, is preparing to conduct a vote this week to authorize a strike following the expiration of their previous contract without a new agreement in place.

The United Food and Commercial Workers' Push for A Tentative Agreement

The demands put forth by the union include increased wages and enhanced safety measures for the workers represented by UFCW Locals 8GS, 324, 770, 1167, 1428, and 1442.

In a statement issued on Saturday, union officials emphasized the importance of reaching a tentative agreement with Food4Less/Foods Co. before the contract expires. They expressed their willingness to dedicate time and effort to achieve this goal. However, the officials noted that instead of collaborating towards a fair contract, the employer chose to engage in tactics that grossly undervalued the workers' contributions and the company's wealth.

The contract expired last Saturday. The union alleges that the company is trying to pressure workers into accepting an offer that falls short of what the parent company, Kroger, offers to other regional grocery workers.

Union Calling for Fair, Higher Wages, and a Respectful Environment

The union statement emphasized the importance of fair wages and a respectful work environment, stating that nobody should face intimidation in their workplace. The statement highlighted that by disregarding their rights, Food4Less and Kroger are impeding their ability to serve customers effectively and maintain well-functioning stores, prompting the need for a strike authorization vote.

In May, UFCW Locals lodged unfair labor practices charges against Food4Less/Foods Co., asserting that they obstructed negotiations and infringed upon workers' rights to representation. Union officials further claimed that the company unlawfully monitored workers, prevented them from engaging in union-related activities, and hindered communication with union representatives in prior instances.

Late Saturday, Food4Less provided a statement to KCAL News, expressing disappointment over UFCW Southern California's decision to walk away from the bargaining table before the contract expired. The statement highlighted the company's commitment to reaching an agreement that benefits its associates, aiming to increase their earnings, sustain industry-leading healthcare, and offer retirement benefits for their future.

The union announced that the results of the strike authorization vote would be disclosed after the voting concludes on June 14.

The Local 135 Rally

Local 135 union members already convened for a contract rally at the Mission Valley Food4Less on Wednesday to underscore the workers' advocacy for a new contract.

Representing more than 700 workers spread across 13 Food4Less locations in San Diego and Imperial counties, local 135 union members actively advocate for improved wages, staffing levels, security measures, and benefits.

In the event of a work stoppage, the workers are urging the community to stand in solidarity with them, asking for support through boycotting if called upon and refrain from crossing picket lines if established. Emphasizing the importance of solidarity, they highlight that community support will significantly impact the lives of these essential workers.
