Colorado Rock Slide Kills 5, Injures Girl: Car-Sized Boulders Gush Along Mountainside; 'It Caught Everybody By Surprise' [VIDEO & REPORT]

Colorado Rock Slide - car-sized boulders gushed along a Colorado mountainside, killing five people and leaving a teenage girl with a broken leg and other injuries.

According to Yahoo! News, a rock slide took place on one of Colorado's most-viewed and photographed mountains, demolishing a famous beginners trail and destroying a large part of the area, delaying the recovery of the victim's bodies.

The Colorado rock slide reportedly happened Monday morning, and it was said that about 100-ton boulders spewed over Mount Princeton, which has a 14,197-foot peak, down to a viewing area, where the Agnes Vaille (VAYL) and the Chalk Creek Valley could be seen. The boulders, which witnesses claimed to be the size of cars, killed five hikers and injured a teenage girl, who was fortunately rescued and transported right away to a Denver hospital.

Chaffee County Department Spokeswoman Monica Broaddus said rescuers planned to wait until the afternoon of Tuesday in order for them to retrieve the bodies of the dead victims after a failed attempt Monday evening.

Meanwhile, Climax molybdenum mine engineers were asked to head to the site and assist the rescuers on how they can remove the bodies safely.

According to Broaddus, the rocks continued to shift Monday evening when the coroner counted the fatalities. "The conditions are considered unstable," she added.

As of late, no details on whether the victims came as a single group and their identifications are still unknown.

Chaffee County Undersheriff John Spezze said a female hiker who has heard the terrifying incident ran down the trail and asked for help.

Spezze added that it is not yet clear if the weather in the area prompted the Colorado rock slide. He said that the slide left a football-field-sized gash on the mountainside. "It was totally unexpected. It caught everybody by surprise," said Spezze.

Officials on the area had asked the U.S. Forest Service for a permanent closure.
