Obama Cancels Visits To A Number of Asian Countries Including Philippines, Indonesia and Brunei Due to Government Shutdown

President Obama has announced plans of cancelling his previous plans of attending summits in Asia, namely Indonesia and Brunei because of the government shutdown that is currently going on in own country. The government shutdown requires the President to remain in Washington.

President Obama was supposed to leave for a month long trip, which had him scheduled to visit four nations in Asia, namely in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines. The president recently cancelled schedule visits to Malaysia and the Philippines, but kept plans for visits to the remaining two nations still open.

However, the President had no choice but to also cancel his Brunei and Indonesia legs of the trip after the third day of the U.S. government shutdown had come and gone, with still no resolution. This seems to be a sign that the shutdown could still go on for a few more days as the President battle it out with the Republicans regarding the nation's funding.

The White House has issued a statement saying, "The president made this decision based on the difficulty in moving forward with foreign travel in the face of a shutdown, and his determination to continue pressing his case that Republicans should immediately allow a vote to reopen the government,"

The move to leave the country, while in the middle of a shutdown could have proven to be very damaging to the reputation of the President. Many would have seen it as an inopportune time to rub shoulders with the leaders of other countries, while his own country was in a time of crisis.

The government shutdown has left hundreds of thousands of government workers idle. Besides the shutdown, the United States has other problems looming over them. The issue on raising the U.S. debt limit has to be addressed before the deadline arrives in a mere two weeks.
