In an essay for Harper Bazaar's "The Daring Issue", Madonna reveals a very personal truth and confesses to the magazine, and its readers of course, that back when she was still young and was trying to make it in the Big Apple, she was actually raped at knifepoint.
It was noticeable that the pop legend just tossed the information like an addition, almost like it is something that she has carefully compartmentalized over time.
Madonna writes that "New York wasn't everything I thought it would be,". She touches on being held at gunpoint, having her apartment broken into a number of times, and being raped at a rooftop that she was dragged into, with a knife on her back! She also mentions that she didn't quite understand why thieves kept on coming back to her home, as she really had nothing of value there after they had taken her stereo.
Madonna's essay seems to be a short summary of her life. She mentions the challenges of moving from one state to another, moving to a completely different country, having children, adopting a child, her road to Kaballah, and even her teenage decision to not shave under her arms and her legs!
Madonna seemed very candid with her writing, saying she didn't even expect the public to give her a hard time with her international adoption. However, she does admit for learning some lessons because of that experience.
She continued to say that today, being daring was something that she considers as "the norm".
The singer touches on her love and appreciation for her four children, and always tries to make them think out of the box. She also uses the piece to talk about her love of acting and making films, which she considers the most rewarding thing that she has ever done.
