Former Fugees lead singer Lauren Hill is now a free woman, after she was officially released from Federal Prison. Incidentally, Hill was imprisoned in the same facility where the Netflix's "Orange is the New Black" was inspired from, after one of the show's advisor served a three month sentence for tax evasion.
The singer officially reported for her sentence last July 8. She was found guilty of not paying taxes on approximately 1.5 million, an amount that she earned from 2005 to 2007. Hill served her sentence in a minimum security prison in Danbury. It is reported to be an open, dorm-type facility that require its inmates to work different jobs ranging from landscaping, maintenance and food service.
Hill's release doesn't mean she is completely off the hook. The singer will be under parole supervision for a whole year. Hill will also spend the next three months under home confinement.
The show "Orange Is The New Black" actually takes place in a Litchfield prison, and not the same facility that Hill went to. However, the show's inspiration, Piper Kerman, who currently works as one of the advisors on the show, also served some time in Danbury prison, in the same facility that Hill found herself in.
Hill's release comes in good timing. The singer just released a single entitled "Consumerism" last Thursday. Hill did not actually record the song while she was behind bars. The track was written and recorded way before the singer was even sent to prison. While Hill was serving out her sentence, Consumerism was mixed and is now just being released.
So far, there has been no official word from Hill or any representative if she will tour the country or make any media appearances to promote her new single.
