Madonna opened up recently for Harper's Bazaar that the moment she moved to New York in 1978, she was welcomed by the bitter truth of how grim and risky life could be, adding that she had been raped at knifepoint on top of an NYC building roof.
Madonna, who was born in Michigan, said, "New York wasn't everything I thought it would be. It did not welcome me with open arms," adding that during her first year stay in the Big Apple at the age of 20, a lot of misfortunes came her way such as being held up at gunpoint, being raped on top of a building roof with a knife pointed to her back, and having experienced strangers broke into her apartment for three times. "I don't know why; I had nothing of value after they took my radio the first time."
"I felt like a warrior plunging my way through the crowds to survive," Madonna said, exposing how she would go nude for art classes just to make both ends meet while aspiring to "become a professional dancer."
The famous '4 Minutes' singer also shared about her struggles in coping up with the UK when she moved to England.
"I didn't understand that there was still a class system. I didn't understand pub culture. I didn't understand that being openly ambitious was frowned upon," she said, adding that for once in her life she felt miserably alone, but she had to do everything she could to survive.
"I grew to love English wit, Georgian architecture, sticky toffee pudding, and the English countryside. There is nothing more beautiful than the English countryside," the 55-year-old pop artist said.
But despite all the trials she faced, she was able to stick it out until she found her way to the limelight.
Today, Madonna is happily residing in her New York home with her four children: 16-year-old Lourdes, her daughter with former personal trainer Carlos Leon; 13-year-old Rocco, her son with Guy Ritchie; and her two adopted kids - 8-year-old David Banda and 7-year-old Mercy James.
Madonna then quipped that the adoption of two children was her personal decision.
"I decided that I had an embarrassment of riches and that there were too many children in the world without parents or families to love them," she said.
