Chemical Arm Removal For Syria Begins Today

Some disarmament experts from different international chemical weapons watchdogs have started on the task of destroying Syria's chemical arsenal. This was the statement given by a monitoring official.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, also known as OPCW is responsible for carrying out the operation.

The destruction of the chemical weapons was made possible when a UN resolution passed after the United States and Russia came to an agreement. International outrage followed after the Syrian government was suspected of holding a chemical weapon attack on rebels and civilians in Damascus last August.

UN chemical weapon inspectors were able to confirm that nerve gas called Sarin had been used in the attack.

Hundreds of people, including dozens of children were killed from the chemical weapon attack. United States blamed the attack on Bashar al-Assad's regime. However, the Syrian leader is turned things around and instead blamed the rebels for carrying out the attack.

In today's first phase of destruction, heavy vehicles will be running over some of the weapons, thereby destroying static mixing and filling units, missle warheads and aerial chemical bombs. There has been no information given as to which of the 19 identified chemical weapons sites is the target of the first operation.

Realistically, destruction of some of the chemical weapons site may not be very easy, as these sites are also known combat zones.

This incident marks the very first time the OPCW has been ordered to destroy chemical weapons in an armory while conflict was still ongoing.

The Syrian government, working under the US-Russian agreement, gave details on their chemical weapon stockpile last night. It is believed that the country has about 1000 tonnes of Sarin, Sulphur mustard and other banned chemicals.

The US and Russia agreement states that by mid 2014, Syria should have removed and destroyed all of their chemical weapons.
