The display unit of LG Electronic Inc, declared last Monday that they would be mass producing curved smartphone displays in order to rival Samsung Electronics Ltd.
Samsung, on the other hand have said last month that they would be releasing a smartphone with a curved display in October.
What are curved displays? It is a design feature that allows a smartphone to be bent, flexed, twisted and folded-it promises the arrival of innovative wearable gadgets to change the high-end market demand for smartphones.
The material used for the flexible phones is a kind of plastic strong enough to not snap as it is bent this way and that.
The potential for this is endless. Several users out there must have their dreams of conveniently putting away their massive Samsung Galaxy tablets/smartphones be realized. One can just fold their coffee-table width galaxy tablets/smartphones as if folding a piece of paper and tuck it safely away in their fashionable too-tight pants (especially for the female variety with ridiculously shallow pockets). One can also imagine phone origami, or wearing their phones around their wrists/ankles/purses. That said, endless potential!
LG Display Co Ltd has said last Monday that it had already begun production of their 6-inch display which is curved from top to bottom. Their first curved smartphone will be launched in November, says a representative.
Samsung's curved display, in contrast, has a pull-out display. Both sides will be curved. They have previously shown off prototypes last January: the screens are flexible, as are the display that extends from the device.
What tech firms have yet to come up with are a means of mass producing the parts at cheaper prices, and how to figure out a display that is both thin and elegant looking (as phones seem to be getting thinner and thinner) as well as be heat-resistant.
