"Captain Phillips," starring Tom Hanks as the eponymous captain, was based on a true-to-life event back in March 2009 when a band of Somali pirates came and hijacked the Maersk Alabama, a container ship making its way past the horn of Africa. When they had not been able to take control of the ship they took the captain for hostage aboard a lifeboat.
"Captain Phillips," tells the terrifying story of the ship, the pirates, and the captain's ordeal over many days over the Gulf of Aden.
Critics have been saying that it may just be the best movie of the year, gleefully penning their "Captain Phillips" reviews with enthusiastic responses.
The film opens with Captain Phillips, (Tom Hanks) preparing for a flight to Oman, establishing his background as a hardworking family man before taking the job at the Maersk Alabama. Aboard the ship, he and his crew get a little introduction before the point of view is switched to that of Somalia, wherein Abulwadi Muse, a pirate, collects a ragtag band of fellow pirates, threatened by local crime bosses to get to work as soon as possible. This puts them in the path towards the Maersk Alabama.
"Captain Phillips" reviews say that Tom Hanks gives a fantastic performance as the eponymous Captain Phillips, with most emphasis on his performance towards the latter half of the film wherein he is already a hostage. Critics have called his performance his best in years.
His co-stars have also been getting attention for their superb acting; "Captain Phillips" reviews also kept an eye on Barkhad Abdi, who plays the Somali pirate Abdulwadi Muse, critics, say, almost steals the limelight from Hanks, as do the other actors playing Somali Pirates. Abdi's nuanced performance as the gaunt, frightening pirate with an obviously troubled background is praised by critics.
"Captain Phillips" reviews also takes note of the action scenes: they have been deemed as being visually realistic: scenes with the US Navy ships and the Navy SEALS were impressively done, and there was no trace of politics visible in the film.
