National Grouch Day: It's Okay To Be A Grouch, But Only For Today!

For the many of you out there who find it difficult to keep up with the seemingly endless number of national holidays, let us wish you a Happy National Grouch Day!

As foolish as it may sound, October 15th is actually one day a year where you are supposed to be as bitter, cold-hearted, and generally grouchy as possible. Some may ask: why would anybody create a holiday in which the point is to be unhappy? More importantly, why would anybody take part in this tradition?

It is a pretty safe assumption that most young adults were obsessed with Sesame Street when they were kids, and most of the older generation spent countless hours watching with their children. With that being said, do you remember Oscar the Grouch? He was possibly the most miserable, trash-can habituating creature in the history of Television.

Well, Sesame Street magazine was the first to claim October 15 as a holiday, inspired by Oscar himself. If you are wondering exactly what makes a grouch, Muppetwiki describes it as, "A Grouch's mission in life is to be as miserable and grouchy as possible, and pass that feeling on to everyone else. Only then will a Grouch feel in touch with his or her world and be happy." It then states that even though a grouch may be happy in misfortune, they can never admit that they are happy.

We all have bad days, so why not make yours on a day where it's completely acceptable? Of all the ridiculous national holidays out there such as Caps Lock Day, Evaluate Your Life Day, Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day, Get Smart About Your Credit Day, etc. National Grouch Day may actually be near the top of the list!

Get out there, be miserable for the day, enjoy other misfortunes, and get all the negativity out of your life because tomorrow is always a new day!
