Royal Christening: William & Kate Break Royal Tradition; 3 Month Old Prince George Glimpsed In Low Key Ceremony

3-month-old Prince George made his first ever public appearance since his birth this Wednesday as he arrived at the St. James' Palace for his christening. He came with parents Prince William and Catherine Duchess of Cambridge.

Baby George was shown around to his relatives, members of the royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, before entering the chapel. The 3-month-old baby Prince George was garbed up in an elaborate christening gown made of lace and satin, an exact replica of the christening gown made in 1841 for Queen Victoria's eldest daughter. The gown has since been used for the christening of Royal babies up until Prince WIlliam, and now has to be put away for preservation.

Royal parents Prince William and Duchess Catherine have meanwhile ensured that Prince George's christening ceremony was low key, inviting only family members and close friends in what was an intimate event. Th Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, formerly affectionately known as WIlliam and Kate, reportedly desire that their son Prince George be raised in a normal upbringing, shrouded in privacy.

William and Catherine have also broken royal tradition by their personal appointments of Prince George's godparents. Traditionally, the royal baby's godparents would have to come from the royal family, but Prince George only has one royal godparent, Zara Philips, who is Prince William's cousin. The rest of the godparents are either friends from Prince George's Parents' childhood, time at the university, and work, among them William van Cutsem and Earl Hugh Grosvenor; Julia Samuel, who was close to William's mother Diana; Emilia Jardine-Paterson, who went to Marlborough College with Kate; Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, private secretary of the royal parents; and Oliver Baker who went to school with the royal parents.
